When did you know you wanted to be an author?
Oh I’ve dreamed of being an author ever since I was a little kid. I always loved writing and knew without doubt that I’d one day write a book. It’s been a lifelong ambition of mine. The showbiz world totally fascinates me and that’s where I decided to forge my career. I was a national magazine columnist for several years and I’ve written for publications all over the world so a book was the natural next step for me. Now that it’s completed and published and people everywhere are reading it, well it’s just the best feeling ever.
What inspired you to write Beyond the Spotlight?
I’ve been lucky enough to meet and interview some of the biggest stars on the planet over the years. And I’ve spent a lot of time in their world, and got to experience what it’s like inside that bubble, and I just had to share it. Celebrities have universal appeal and a book exploring their world and showing what they’re actually like behind the scenes hasn’t really been done before and I knew there was a market out there for it. Beyond The Spotlight is like a VIP ticket into the world of riches and glamour and fame. It’s full of swanky parties, red carpet movie premieres and interviews with everyone from Charlize Theron to Paris Hilton.
What do you find the most challenging about being an author?
To be honest, I’ve loved every single second of it so far. I just enjoyed the whole experience of writing Beyond The Spotlight and tried not to stress too much about anything. I kept my head down and wrote, wrote, wrote. My advice to aspiring authors is to just write one page at a time. Don’t think about the mammoth task in front of you because it can be pretty daunting. Just write day by day, page by page and before you know it, you’ll have a book.
Why did you decide to work in the showbiz industry?
Oh man, because it’s just so much fun. It’s so glamorous and lavish and exciting. The events, the parties, the stars themselves, everything about the showbiz industry is completely captivating. You get totally hooked on it and every day is different and unpredictable, there’s never ever a dull moment. One minute, I was going to modelling school with Janice Dickinson, the next I was hugging my idol Ryan Seacrest. It’s one crazy ride!
Are you working on something now?
Yes! I’m currently at the planning stage for my second book with my awesome publishers Book Hub, which I will begin writing straight after Christmas. It will be released in 2017 and it’s very different from Beyond The Spotlight…that’s all I can say for now. I can’t wait to get to work on it.

Alan Murphy is a well-known Irish radio show host and entertainment journalist and has been a popular and permanent fixture on Ireland’s airwaves with Galway Bay FM for over a decade. He has written for countless magazines both nationally and internationally and worked as a showbiz editor and weekly columnist, reaching millions of readers. Alan, who spends a lot of his time at the legendary Chateau Marmont in LA, has covered everything during his career from the tennis at Wimbledon to movie premieres in Hollywood – he’s even had lunch with Paris Hilton, gone to modeling school with Janice Dickinson, and attended the biggest VIP parties imaginable. He’s met a who’s who of Tinseltown and is finally sharing his stories and experiences in his long-awaited first book Beyond The Spotlight.
