Author Interview with E. Van Lowe

I’m interviewing E. Van Lowe today, author of YA paranormal romance “Moondancers”. Welcome to my blog!

Author Interview

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I decided I wanted to be a writer when I was 10. My mother had a big hand in the decision. I was a very active child, and the summer I turned 10 I came down with pneumonia. The doctor prescribed bed rest for much of the summer. My mother had to come up with something to occupy my mind to keep me from driving her crazy. She mentioned my vivid imagination, and asked me to write some of my stories down. Then she hit me with the hook—“You can make money writing.” I spent the summer reading children’s magazines and trying to write my own versions of the stories in them. By the end of summer, my mother had a writer on her hands. It wouldn’t be until my late 20s before I ever saw a dime from my writing. I’m still trying to make money. Thanks, Mom. Lol.

What inspired you to write Moondancers?

Ever since I read Beautiful Creatures (Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl) I’d been wanting to write from a male perspective. In the YA paranormal romance genre, the protagonists are almost always girls. It’s risky writing from a male pov, but heck, I’m a guy. And since I am now beginning my journey into self-publishing, and I don’t have to worry about pushback from my publisher, I decided to go for it. I liked the idea of setting the book in the community in which I live, Beverly Hills, because everyone associates BH with glamour. I wanted to show a different side of the community—the slums of Beverly Hills, which I thought might be interesting for readers. I did some research and discovered there is a little known hot spring that runs beneath Beverly Hills. Southern California is a desert, so the idea that there is water running beneath our feet that very few people know about sparked my imagination.

What is your editing process like?

I edit the entire time I’m writing. I am one of those writers that keeps going back. When the ms is completed but still a little clunky, I give it to my editor, Camille. In the past, I would then send it off to my publisher to begin the long editing process, but with Moondancers I am entering the world of self-publishing. When Camille was done with the ms, I sat with her and went through the edits, then while I was doing her edits I sent it off to another editor. I used Solafide Publishing. They did a copy edit with some edit notes. My beta team also had the book by then, and few of them are really good at catching things we all may have missed. After that, I uploaded it to KDP, read it again, made some final changes and that’s it.

Who is your favorite character from your book?

I don’t have a favorite character, although I do have a favorite relationship. I especially like the romance between Josh and Lara. The book centers on the idea that two strangers can possibly have been destined to become soulmates. I believe this strongly which is why these two characters are so dear to me. But also like in the book I believe that soulmates can meet, fall in love, and still not wind up together because as humans we are good at screwing things up.

Did you set any writing goals for 2016? If so, what are they?

I have a very ambitious schedule for 2016. The sequel to Moondancers is due out in May, and then I have a novella about two other characters in the book scheduled hopefully for the fall. I am also writing a TV pilot with another TV writer. The pilot is due in July. So I’m pretty slammed until the fall.

Are you working on something now?

I am currently working on the Moondancers sequel and the TV pilot.
