I’m interviewing Toneka R. Etienne, Ph.D. today, author of self-help / personal development book “Become You”. Welcome to my blog!

When did you know you wanted to be an author?
I’ve known that I wanted to be a writer since I was a child. I used to write short stories and poetry when I was younger and always enjoyed English classes in school. Over the years, life took over and I completely stopped writing. For years I toyed with the idea of writing a book but nothing ever materialized until one day I wrote out the outline for this book.

What inspired you to write Become You?
My own personal struggles during some pretty difficult years of my life. Once I made it through the difficult season, I wanted to chronicle my transformation and process of how I was able to come out stronger on the other side. I knew that many of the things I struggled with are what most modern day women struggle with today, and I wanted to provide a blueprint that I used and still use today to navigate through and balance my own life.

What is your editing process like?
I come from the world of academia, so in the beginning of writing the book I edited it down so much. I got some great advice from other writers who encouraged me to just write from my heart and not worry about the small imperfections. Some of the best parts of my book happened when I was just in a flow and let the words and my need to edit go. I realized in the process that I learned how to balance my intellectual side and need to instruct, educate, and teach, with the creative side of myself that has no rules or boundaries. It’s a beautiful combination!

Did you set any writing goals for 2015? Did you meet any so far?
Before writing the book, I was and still do write weekly on my blog at www.tonekaetienne.com. However, I started writing this book in February 2015 with the goal to complete the book in August, which I did. I picked a release date for the book in March knowing that setting a deadline for myself would give me the necessary accountability to complete the book on time.

Are you working on something now? If so, can you tell us a little about it?
As a true creative, I’m now exploring all the parts of me that I have left dormant for so many years. I have discovered a love of the spoken word just recently, and have plans to turn my book into an audio version. In addition, I’m interested in creating products and programs to inspire and encourage women to own their truth and step into their destiny.
