Author Interview with Becky Johnson

I’m interviewing Becky Johnson, author of mystery / suspense “Run”. Welcome to my blog, Becky!

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

It was a dream I had as a little kid. I was always writing stories! I wrote my first book when I was 16, but I didn’t think it would ever go anywhere so for years I ignored my inner story-teller. Now of course I have an overload of stories in my head.

Where did you get the inspiration for Run?

I get inspiration from everywhere. The news story at the beginning of Run is based on a real event that I remember as a child. The story just sort of evolved from there.

What is your editing process like?

Painful! My first draft is usually fairly thin in spots so on my second draft I usually add detail and flesh out the characters a bit more. Then I read it out loud and really focus on details like word choice, repetition, and unnecessary sentences. My awesome betas tackle it next and I review with their feedback before I send it to my editor. Once back from the editor, and once I have incorporated their changes, I do one last reading out loud to catch anything else. I have found that reading out loud is the best way for me to catch things.

Who is your favorite character from the book?

Max! I love that dog. I really wish he was real.

What are your writing goals for 2015?

I have a book coming out in July (the third in the Charlotte Marshall series) then I have a standalone that I would love to get out by the end of the year.

Are you working on something now? If so, can you tell us a little about it?

I am working on a thriller titled THEM. It has been in my mind for years. It is the story of a small town plagued by fear. People in the town are taken by creatures only known as THEM. I am really excited for it. It is a little different from anything I ever wrote before.

Author Bio

Run is Becky Johnson’s first published novel, but not her first book. Books are Becky’s passion and always have been. She used to get in trouble in school for reading during class! Becky has Master’s degrees in social work and history, and for her day job she is a social worker. In her writing she tries to answer a question that is important to both social work and history: Why? She always wants to know why people do the things they do or feel the way they feel. When not reading or writing she enjoys yoga, running, cooking, and makes a pretty mean chili!
