Author Interview with Marie Morgan

I’m interviewing author Marie Morgan today. She’s the author of “Getting Lost”, an erotica novella currently on tour with Enchanted Book Promotions. Thanks for answering my questions, Marie, and welcome to my blog!

Author Interview

1) When did you know you wanted to become an author?

Since I held my first Little Golden Book in my hands and marveled at the mysteries of the words inside. Okay, seriously, those books developed my love of reading, not of writing. I got my first taste of awesome when I won a writing contest in high school. I was hooked. I’d been writing letters to the local paper for a few years—I never mailed any of them, but that’s another story. Anyway, this writing contest came up and our English teacher told us about it. I thought maybe I should enter. I did and won first place. I was stunned. It was that moment I knew I wanted to be an author; but then life took over and I was redirected down a different path for a long time. Finally, I’m right where I want to be, doing what I love.

2) Where did you get the inspiration for Getting Lost and The Island series?

I was inspired by Anne Rice. But my own series came from an understanding of what Anne was saying with her Sleeping Beauty trilogy and wanting to create something a lot more true to life. I didn’t want a fairy tale; but something someone could identify with and thereby take to heart the meaning behind the story. Letting someone step into a purely erotic fantasy is one thing; showing them how to succumb and let the BDSM lifestyle help them let go of pain, loss, or control is something entirely different. So, while Anne inspired me, I didn’t want fan fiction or a spin-off. I tried to take what I learned from her series and make it more understandable.

3) How long did it take you to write Getting Lost from start to finish?

Two months. It flowed nicely. I’d been working out details for a while before I began. I think having a good plan and idea of where the story is going helps.

4) What is your editing process like?

I re-read the whole manuscript every day before I start writing. Because of this, I’m not afraid to add later or change things as I go. I just fix them the following morning and flesh out places I see gaps. I then leave the book alone for a couple of weeks, pick it up again, and add to it. Another resting period and I begin to cut things: Erroneous words, redundant passages, filler, places with too much description, and whole paragraphs that don’t add to the story. Once I’m done with that I grammar check and send to the ladies at INDIE Books Gone Wild. When they return it, I fill in gaps I didn’t see, reconstruct sentences, and work on their suggestions. It takes a couple of months, but I love the end product.

5) What was the most challenging part about writing Getting Lost?

Not being discovered writing it. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine and very few people know I’m the one who wrote it. Marie Morgan is obviously a pen name. I love the alliteration of it and the anonymity it provides. I used to write short, erotic tales when I was in my twenties and burn or delete them afterward so no one would find them. It’s funny. Now, I have different worries. Even Ms. Rice used a pen name for her erotic tales. No one knew it was her for years. I understand the reasoning behind it; I just wish the stigma didn’t exist.

6) What are your writing goals for 2014?

I plan to finish The Island series and get it out there for the masses to enjoy. I think… no, hope it’ll be the beginning of a whole new facet to the genre.

7) Are you working on something right now? If so, can you tell us more about it?

There are two books left in The Island series: Crossroads and Being Found. Crossroads is the thing I’m most focused on writing right now. I’m hoping to have them both done by the end of next year. If life calms down, and things begin to balance, I may find a way to get them done sooner.

I appreciate the opportunity to interview on your blog. Thank you. I hope you get a chance to check out Getting Lost.
