Author Interview
When did you know you wanted to be an author?
I’ve always loved reading and writing since school. I started writing seriously, at a time when I had the chance to focus on it, life changed for me somewhat for the better, and out sprung the writer. The moment I knew, I wanted to be a writer was when I completed the full book synopsis for A Stranger in France. I plotted out a detailed character profile, chapter plot and I could see the book in a rough outline, all I had to do was bring it to life. When I wrote the first three chapters, it was at that point, when I was so excited and motivated I thought to myself, yep! I’m having fun this is me and I want to do this as a “day job”, forever. Creating a storyline with twists and turns, interesting characters and then fleshing the whole thing out made me remember just how much I love to write, and just how creative I can be with it.
What inspired you to write A Stranger in France?
Life, my love for the French language and country. I had an urge to create a romantic and suspenseful story that’s modern and a little different. As a reader, I really like when I’m transported to different locations, and experiencing the location via words. This made me want to create a story that spans across different locations. Hence A Stranger in France is set in London, the UK coastal area and France.
What is your editing process like?
Well with my first experience, it was a pain in the ass if I’m honest! But I learned a hell of a lot. Now I write, then edit, then engage a separate editor’s input as well as input from a publisher’s editor that’s assigned to my book.
What do you find the most challenging about being an author?
I’m a working mum here in London, my main challenge is juggling my need and want to write with life. I’m generally pretty good at meeting deadlines and by nature a focused person, but this may mean I’m writing late into the night once I’ve got all my mama duties out the way, and had quality time with my son. This should be a bit more easier for me, now I’ve reduced my “day job” working hours from full- time to part-time for various personal reasons. But this change also means more time to write- happy days.
Are you participating in NaNoWriMo?
Of course! I started a bit late, so I am a little behind but the motivation is there, to see it through and see if I can pen 50,000 words in a month. I think that NaNoWriMo is a fantastic thing, this is my first time participating. I plan to do it many times and participate often. I think it’s each year so I’ll be there for 2017 without a doubt. At the moment I’m writing a romantic thriller, this novel idea was my first ever story idea before A Stranger in France and my next romance novella to be published this month ( November) Not Just for Christmas, so I am super excited to go back to it, it’s been simmering for exactly one year.
Are you working on something now?
Yes, my romantic- thriller novel. A fast-paced who-dun-it mystery surrounded by romance. The story is set in London and Amsterdam two cities I really love. Not your average love triangle or romantic story, I have a very diverse character line up in terms of race, sexuality, and gender. You’re going to love it! Visit my author site for more details I will post a chapter preview soon. There is a chapter preview for my current romance novella released this month called Not Just for Christmas also. www.kimknightauthor.com
