Author Interview with Max Candee

I’m interviewing Max Candee, author of children’s book “Globaloonies”. Welcome to my blog, and thanks for answering my questions.

Author Interview

1. When did you know you wanted to be an author?

Pretty early. When I was about 13 years old, my dad brought home a very old manual typewriter (of the sort you see in black-and-white movies). I fell in love with that typewriter. That very moment, I decided to become an author. And since that time, I’ve been writing almost non-stop, under different pen names, for different audiences and age groups.

2. Where did you get the inspiration for your book?

It comes from my life, and especially from my kids. With my three children, we always discuss things, and they share what fascinates them. What’s the longest word? Did dinosaurs have body odor problems and stinky breath? What happens if you juggle on Mars? What if we built a time machine and met Montezuma? They have so many questions that I have way more ideas for books than I have time.
Sometimes, we take a walk in the forest or along the sea, and they brainstorm jokes and ideas for “my” books. Then all I have to do is write their ideas down.

3. What is your editing process like?

I write the first draft, and let my oldest son read it. He tells me what to change, and I rewrite. Then I let him and my daughters read it. If they like it, I listen to their feedback, rewrite and send the book to three professional editors: the content editor who helps me rewrite the book a few times for clarity and story structure, the line editor who fixes my grammar, and the copy editor and proofreader who fixes my typos. Sometimes, I rewrite a book up to ten times… or more.

4. What was the most challenging part of writing this book?

By far, the most difficult part is writing in a way that keeps readers’ attention. Children get distracted easily, so I add lots of pictures and jokes appropriate for their age (or so I hope!). I’m trying to make the books both educational and funny.

5. What are your writing goals for 2014?

I want to finish my Globaloonies series of 6 books (done), finish my Whatta Weird World series of 4 books (3 are published, 1 to go), and launch 3 books for young teens (1 launched, 2 are being illustrated now to be launched soon).

6. Are you working on something now? If so, can you tell us a little about it?
Yep. I’m working on 3 books for children, and 3 books for adults. Because I also work full time and have a large family, I write when my family is asleep… it’s like going into my own time travel adventures without leaving my room. I love every minute of it.
