I’m interviewing Amanda Meuwissen, author of gay romance “Changeling”, on my blog today. Welcome, Amanda, and thanks for answering my questions.

Author Interview

When did you know you wanted to become an author?

I’ve written since I was very young, but the deciding factor for me was when I was about 16 and was first writing fanfiction, and I had someone comment anonymously about how much a story I wrote affected them and changed their life for the better. I strive to get that feeling back whenever I can.

Where did you get the inspiration for Changeling?

Changeling is the sequel to Incubus, the second book in the trilogy The Incubus Saga, which was inspired by my love of fae lore and Arthurian Legend, the TV show Supernatural, and a web comic I once read about a teenage boy with an imaginary incubus for a friend. It has clearly come a long way from those areas of influence, but they all play their part. I also think the world needs a few more bisexual heroes.

What is your editing process like?

I publish through BigWorldNetwork.com, which first serializes my work online, chapter by chapter. I vigorously edit each chapter before I pass it along to my Associate Editor and good friend Meagan Hedin, who then passes it back to me for review. I often make a few more edits before it goes up on the BWN site. Then, when a book is ready to be compiled, I put all of those chapters together and read through it all again, taking very detailed notes about important plot points, logistics of weapons, things I can’t forget to mention, possible plot holes – the works! And check things off as I read, making sure everything is addressed. It’s a process, all right!

What was the most challenging part about writing this book?

It’s the longest of the trilogy for one, and I wanted to be sure there weren’t any areas that dragged, as I know that can happen quite easily with very long books. Being brutal with what could be cut is always difficult, but is also the most important step in making a book flow. I cut quite a few babies from this one!

What are your writing goals for 2014?

I’d like to have at least half of Book 3 in The Incubus Saga: Sidhe done before 2015, as it has a planned date of release next July or August. I’d also like to start laying the ground work for my story after The Incubus Saga, a YA GLBT vampire novel. I also plan to stick to my goal of writing a little every day.

Are you working on something right now? If so, can you tell us about it?

Changeling ends on quite a cliffhanger, and I’m already a good fourth of the way through Sidhe, which brings what starts off as a more localized story to world scale, setting Nathan and the others up to save Earth and the fae realm from coming war and disaster. My vampire story, still with a working title, has me very excited. It’ll be about two friends, both 18 and enjoying their senior year of high school, and one of them becomes a vampire. This will be another budding love story, as the human friend has been in love with the other for years, and the newly created vampire soon starts to realize he feels the same way. Add in devious hunters, a few good hunters, other vampires, and high school drama, and I think I’ll have something pretty wonderful.
