Author Interview
When did you know you wanted to become an author?
It’s funny because I didn’t really think about being an author until about a year ago. I knew it was a dream but not one that seemed like a reality. I work full-time. I’m a mother and wife. I move all around the world. So for me, it seemed like a distant dream. Finally, I started writing Breaking Mobius to pass the time and my husband said, “Why don’t you sell the story?” I didn’t have a good reason not to…so I did it. Sometimes it takes another person to notice your talents to realize that you truly have one.
Where did you get the inspiration for Breaking Möbius?
Breaking Mobius was based loosely on friends and family, including my own experiences. It’s so hard to keep secrets, so I just tell people’s secrets by writing them in books. (laughs)
What is your editing process like?
I am so serious when it comes to editing. I think I edited Breaking Mobius about six times before sending it to a professional. Even after the professional had it, I found some more things. So I am a firm believer that a book will never be perfect in the eyes of the writer. Just today, I was thinking to myself as I brushed my teeth, I wish I would have put that sentence in the book. I have to learn to let it go and have faith that what I wrote and checked umpteen times will be good enough for the readers.
What was the most challenging part about writing Breaking Möbius?
The most challenging part was finding ways to speak from Justice’s point of view. Thank goodness my husband helped me out! Men have a different mindset than women and I wanted it to be authentic. I want the reader to get lost in the characters.
What are your writing goals for 2014?
My writing goals for 2014 are to continue writing my murder mystery that I started over ten years ago. I’m thinking of making it a series but I just may make it a novella and call it a day. I wrote it for a creative writing class at Mississippi State University and wanted to expound on it.
Are you working on something right now? If so, can you tell us more about it?
I’m working on my second novel called Girl Soldier. It’s a suspense novel about a young girl named Rain who finds out her parents were CIA agents before raising her on a farm. Her mother left her and her father to get back into the undercover lifestyle and never returned. Rain starts a quest to find her mother and find the answers to all her unspoken questions. What she doesn’t realize is that sometimes the answers are much more painful than knowing nothing at all.
