Author Interview with Duncan M. Hamilton

tatteredbanner

Today I’m interviewing author Duncan M. Hamilton on my blog. He is the author of fantasy novel “The Tattered Banner”, which is currently touring with Enchanted Book Promotions. My questions are bolded, responses regular text.

Author Interview

1) When did you know you wanted to become an author?

I don’t think there was ever a specific moment. I’ve written stories for as long as I can remember, and have a cupboard full of handwritten pages at home. The habit has gradually taken up more and more of my time!

2) Where did you get the inspiration from for The Tattered Banner?

Renaissance Europe heavily influences the culture and the world that The Tattered Banner is set in. The story itself comes from hours of daydreaming and scribbling down plot ideas.

3) How long did it take you to write The Tattered Banner from start to finish?

The first draft only took about 3 months. Getting it from there to a finished product took a lot longer – on and off for maybe another 6 months.

4) What is your editing process like?

I write the first draft and forget about it for a month or so. Then I reread it, making notes, and go through it for a second draft. Then it’s sent out to a couple of beta readers whose judgement I value. I take into account their feedback for draft three, and then send it to a developmental editor for a professional eye. Draft four takes that feedback onboard. I give it another read through to make sure I’m happy with everything, make changes to anything that needs it, and then it goes for line editing and proofreading. Finished.

5) What was the most challenging part about writing The Tattered Banner?

The second and third drafts are where I make the biggest changes, and making sure I don’t interrupt the flow of the story and introduce inconsistency is the trickiest part of this phase. That was certainly the case for The Tattered Banner, and everything else I’ve written.

6) What are your writing goals for 2013?

To meet all the deadlines I’ve set for myself! It’s not looking good right now!

7) Are you working on something right now? Can you tell us more about it?

Yes and yes. In addition to working on the edits for the sequel to The Tattered Banner, I’m working on the first draft of a new trilogy that I hope to have ready to start releasing toward the end of next year. It’s set in the same Middle Sea world as The Tattered Banner, but explores a different culture and part of the world. It’s a tale of loss and revenge. So far anyway!
